Ingredients
Split
pigeon peas

Toor dal

Garlic
pods(finely chopped) –

Serrano Chilies(finely chopped) –

Cumin seeds
(Jeerakam) –

Mustard seeds

Asafoetida powder(Kayam) –

Turmeric powder

tsp
Oil
or
ghee
–

Salt
(As reqd) –
Coriander leaves (for garnishing) –
Instructions
Cook dal in a pressure cooker with
turmeric powder
and
salt
:- If you are not using a pressure cooker soak the dal in
water
for about an hour before you cook it.
Heat
oil
in another pan.
Splutter
mustard seeds
and
cumin seeds
.
Add asafoetida powder and sautT.
Add
ginger
,
garlic
and chilies and sautT for a few seconds.
Add the diced onions, tomatoes and
salt
and continue sautTing.
Add the cooked dal to this mixture and simmer for a few mins.
:- Add
water
if it¦s too thick.
Garnish with coriander leaves.
:- Serve hot with bread or rice or you can even serve it as soup
:- If you want to make it spicier you can try adding a dash of
garam masala
while its simmering.
