  1. For preparing fish in tomato sauce, first smear the fish pieces with a paste of pepper powder, turmeric and salt. Keep aside for a few minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and fry the marinated fish pieces to a golden brown color.
  3. Meanwhile, cook the tomato pieces in 1/2 cup water and extract the puree through a sieve. Keep this aside.
  4. Grind the skins of red chillies, ginger, garlic and turmeric to a fine paste. Keep the masala paste aside.
  5. Heat oil in a frying pan and fry thinly sliced 1/4 cup of onions. When the onions are browned, add the masala paste and onion pieces which are cut round. Saute well.
  6. Pour vinegar, tomato puree, soya bean sauce, 1/2 cup water and add required salt.
  7. Allow the curry to boil and add the fried fish pieces. Season with sugar and remove from fire when the gravy thickens.
  8. Fish in tomato sauce is ready. Serve hot.
