Puliupma is a delicious traditional styled dish having its origin and popularity in Tamil Brahmin homes. Rice flour and tamarind form the basic ingredients for the dish. The soft and delicious Puliupma with a tangy flavor form a lip smacking breakfast/snack dish. The dish has a close resemblance and tastes like tamarind rice. The rice flour should be granular in form like broken wheat consistency and not powdery. What makes the dish unique and special is the simplicity of the dish.   • Red chilly – 5-7nos
  • Tamarind a small lemon size –
  • Hing a little –
  • Rice flour/Rice rawa – 2cups
  • Cooking oil
  • Salt to taste –
  1. First extract the tamarind and a make a thick paste of tamarind pulp.
  2. Add the rice flour or rice rawa to the tamarind mixture and prepare a thick batter like idli batter.
  3. Take a heavy kadai pan and heat 4 teaspoon of oil.
  4. Season with mustard, red chillies and hing. Once the mustard seeds start cracking, add the readied mixture of tamarind pulp and rice flour.
  5. Let the mixture cook in sim for sometime, if requires add little oil for roasting. Once the upma is roasted and cooked it can be served. Prepare the dish in low flame so the upma becomes soft and fluffy.
  6. Serve the delicious Puliupma hot.
