Onion Sambar In Kerala Style

Onion Sambar or Ulliu Sambar is a very popular dish and is a favorite at home which goes well with idli, dosa and rice. Pearl onions or Shallots have a distinct taste and flavor of their own. Onion Sambar is a simple dish where flavors come from sambar powder, curry leaves and soaked tamarind. Onion Sambar dish falls into the category of comfort foods and dal is nutritious too. The only variation from the usual Sambar dish is the intrusion of pearl onions. Here is a well illustrated recipe for how to make Onion Sambar in Kerala style. Addition of fried coconut mixture enhances the spicy taste of Onion Sambar. The sight of round, shiny pearl onions floating on top of the curry can make anyone fall for the dish.

Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup Split gram Thuvara parippu
  • 4 nos Green chillies slit
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 cup Shallots Kunjulli
  • 2 tbsp Sambar powder
  • Tamarind lime sized ball, Puli
  • 1/2 cup Coconut grated
  • 1 tbsp Shallots thinly sliced, Kunjulli
  • 2 nos Dry red chillies
  • Curry leaves Few
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds Jeerakam
  • 1/2 tsp Fenugreek seeds Uluva
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 2 tsp Ghee
  • Coriander leaves Few
  • Oil As reqd
  • Salt As reqd

Instructions
 

  • Cook the dal in enough water in a pressure cooker. Mash the dal and keep aside.
  • Dry saute cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds in a pan. Add grated coconut and saute till golden in color.
  • Grind the coconut mixture to a fine paste. Keep this aside.
  • Soak the tamarind in 2 cups of water and sieve to gather the extract.
  • Take a pan and pour ghee. Heat ghee and fry shallots, green chillies and curry leaves. Keep this aside.
  • Add turmeric powder and required salt to the tamarind water and boil.
  • Add the ghee fried shallots, green chillies, curry leaves and sambar powder to the tamarind mixture and boil.
  • Add cooked dal, ground coconut and required water. Boil the curry. Garnish with coriander leaves and remove from fire.
  • Take a pan and pour oil. Splutter mustard seeds and saute sliced shallots, dry red chllies and curry leaves. Pour into the sambar.
  • Onion sambar in kerala style is ready and serve hot.
