Matar Paneer

Green peas(mattar/mutter) and cheese curry

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb Paneer cubed
  • 1" piece Ginger
  • 6 nos Garlic pods
  • 2 nos Onions medium) or 400 gm (diced
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp Red chilly powder
  • 1 ½ Coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp Cumin powder Jeerakam
  • 2 nos Tomato chopped, large
  • 2 3/4 cups Water or whey
  • 5 cups Green peas canned or frozen
  • ½ tsp Garam masala powder
  • Salt As reqd
  • ½ cup Vegetable oil
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
  • 1 no Pressure cooker minimum 8 liter

Instructions
 

  • Grind ginger and garlic into a paste or crush them in a mortar and pestle.
  • Place pressure cooker on high flame and pour the oil into it.
  • When the oil is hot, add onions and fry till golden brown.
  • Add prepared ginger and garlic and stir for a few seconds.
  • Add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, salt, tomatoes and 1/4 cup water or whey.
  • Stir occasionally and cook till tomatoes are pulpy and oil separates, for about 5 mins.
  • Add peas and saute for about 2 mins and add remaining water or whey.
  • Close cooker and bring to full pressure on high heat, then reduce heat and cook for another minute.
  • Remove cooker from heat and release pressure by slightly lifting the vent weight.
  • Open cooker and place it on medium heat and add paneer.
  • Simmer for about 5 mins and stir in garam masala powder.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.
  • :- Serve hot.
  • :- I use either "Nanak" brand paneer or any brand of queso blanco (you can find it in any of the mexican stores or at costco). Queso blanco (queso = cheese; blanco = white) is paneer but most brands are salted..
  • :- You can also substitute paneer with extra firm tofu.
  • :-As always play around with the spices to suit your mood!
  • :- I find its tastier if you don¦t fry paneer and its also healthier!
