Kadachakka Upperi | Breadfruit Upperi

Kadachakka Upperi is a traditional styled delicious dish, very popular in Kerala. Kadachakka, also termed Breadfruit is a seasonal fruit and very widely cultivated in Kerala. Almost all houses have a breadfruit tree in its backyard. Kadachakka Upperi goes very well with rice for noon day meals. Breadfruit Upperi is an easy to prepare dish and very nutritious too rich in vital nutrients required for body. Ingredients
  

  • Kadachakka (Breadfruit) : 1 no
  • Chopped onion : 1/2 cup
  • Red Chilli Powder : 2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • 5 tsp Coriander powder : 4
  • 10 leaves Curry leaves : 8
  • Turmeric Powder: 1 tsp
  • 5 tsp Coconut / refined oil : 4

Instructions
 

  • For preparing the delicious dish, first peel the Kadachakka , cut it into 4 lengthy pieces and remove the core (Koonju) and then cut them further into small pieces as shown in the below picture.
  • Heat oil in a frying pan.
  • Add the chopped onion into the oil and stir it.
  • Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chilli powder, curry leaves and salt .
  • Stir the mix well for about five minutes.
  • Wash the kadachakka pieces and then add it into the hot masala mix.
  • Stir the mix well.
  • Add some water (preferably equal to the level of pieces) and stir it further and close it with a lid and allow to cook the kadachakka pieces properly.
  • When the kadachakka pieces are cooked well, put off the stove and stir the upperi for 1 – 2 minutes .
  • Kadachakka upperi is ready and it can be served with chappathi / poori / cooked rice / Kanji etc.
