Idichakka Thoran | Tender Jackfruit Thoran

Idichakka Thoran is the delicious stir fry prepared from tender jackfruit. You would have heard of jackfruits, a very popular product of Kerala. Jackfruits are seasonal available largely from November to June especially after heavy rains. But tender jackfruits, many are ignorant. Now these fruits are the rage of the season. Tender jackfruits are soft on the inside and cooking with right proportions of coconut flavored mixture you can expect something great. Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 kg Tender jackfruit chopped into fine pieces, Idichakka
  • 5 nos Dry red chillies Kollamulaku
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Salt As reqd
  • 1 cup Grated Coconut
  • 3 nos Small onions Kunjulli
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves

For seasoning:

  • 5 tbsp Oil
  • 2 tsp Gram
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 4 nos Dry red chillies Kollamulaku
  • 5 nos Curry leaves

Instructions
 

  • For preparing Tender Jackfruit Thoran, first grind together the red chillies and turmeric powder well.
  • Cook the vegetable along with the ground mixture, salt and required water.
  • When the jack fruit is cooked, mash the pieces.
  • Grind together coconut, small onions and curry leaves.
  • Heat oil in a pan or a kadai.
  • Add gram and mustard seeds.
  • When the mustard seeds splutter, add the red chillies and curry leaves.
  • Add the jackfruit strands and the ground coconut mixture. Check for salt and add salt if it seems necessary.
  • Saute the mix well in low flame.
  • Cover the pan and allow it to cook. Remove the lid and let all trace of water evaporate in low flame. Remove pan from fire.
  • :- Serve the delicious and nutritious dish with hot rice.
  • :- When you use canned jackfruit, drain the water in it and run the vegetable through cold water. This will remove excess sodium.
