Toor dal curry/Dhal/Daal

  • 1 cup Split pigeon peas Toor dal
  • 1 no Onion diced
  • 1 no Tomatoes diced
  • 1” piece Ginger finely chopped
  • 2 nos Garlic pods finely chopped
  • 2 nos Serrano Chilies finely chopped
  • ½ tsp Cumin seeds Jeerakam
  • ½ tsp Mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp Asafoetida powder Kayam
  • ½ tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp Oil or ghee
  • Salt As reqd
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing


  • Cook dal in a pressure cooker with turmeric powder and salt
  • :- If you are not using a pressure cooker soak the dal in water for about an hour before you cook it.
  • Heat oil in another pan.
  • Splutter mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
  • Add asafoetida powder and sautT.
  • Add ginger, garlic and chilies and sautT for a few seconds.
  • Add the diced onions, tomatoes and salt and continue sautTing.
  • Add the cooked dal to this mixture and simmer for a few mins.
  • :- Add water if it¦s too thick.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.
  • :- Serve hot with bread or rice or you can even serve it as soup
  • :- If you want to make it spicier you can try adding a dash of garam masala while its simmering.
