Brinjal Therakal

Kathirikai therakal is a famous chettinad breakfast sidedish apart from other specialities like Vengaya kosu,Chummakulambhu. In tamil kathirikai means eggplant so this is like eggplant kuruma(korma). I guess nobody does korma with eggplant and its special to karaikudi.

  • Brinjal 4 no.
  • Potato 1 no.
  • Tomato 1 no.
  • onion 1 no.

To Temper:

  • Oil 1 tbsp
  • Fennel seed 1/4 tsp
  • Pepper corn 10 no.
  • Cinnamon Small piece


  • Chop the brinjal in cube size
  • Chop the Potato In cube size
  • Chop onion and tomato
  • Grind the Ingredients Mentioned above
  • Heat the oil and temper the Fennel seed, pepper corn, cinnamon and curry leaves and saute the onion for 2 mins
  • add tomato and mix well
  • add potato and mix it
  • add brinjal and mix it
  • add grinned paste, mix it and add 2 glasses of water and allow to cook the vegetables
  • once vegetable get cooked and the gravy becomes thick consistency, keep the flame simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Now brinjal therakkal is ready to serve
