Cherupayar Thoran | Moong Dal Stir Fry

Cherupayar Thoran is a delicious stir fry prepared from Green Gram. Cherupayar Thoran is a very popular and traditional dish in Kerala, very simple and humble, enjoyed with kanji or rice gruel. This is a protein rich food at the same time very relaxing and soothing for your tummy. Also termed Moong Dal Stir Fry, the dish is very economical and affordable for all sections of society. This is one of the easiest of dishes that requires very minimum ingredients too. Moong Dal Stir Fry is a favorite with kids too as they find it not too hot and spicy. Ingredients
  

  • 3/4th of Green moong dal
  • ½ cup Grated Coconut
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • ½ tsp Turmeric powder
  • Chilli powder ¾ tsp
  • Salt as needed
  • 1 cup Water
  • Curry leaves few

Instructions
 

  • For preparing the delicious and traditional styled dish, first wash and soak the moong dal in water for around 5- 6 hrs.
  • Drain the water used for soaking, and cook the dal in fresh water. Close and cook on medium low flame till the moong dal is soft. Make sure that the dal doesn’t overcook and turn mushy.
  • While it is cooking, make the coconut mixture by mixing together the grated coconut, chopped garlic, cumin seeds, turmeric powder and chili powder.
  • You can also grind in a mixer to a coarse mixture. Stir in the coconut mixture into the cooked green gram. Turn to low flame and cover with a lid.
  • Keep the 'thoran' in low flame for another 5-7 mins. Remove the lid and stir fry the dish. Serve the dish with rice and curd.
