Kerala Kaalan

Ingredients
  

  • 1 no Raw plantain Nendra kaya
  • 1 cup Yam/Chena chopped
  • 2 cups Curd
  • 1/2 of Coconut
  • 5 nos Pepper
  • 1 no Green chilly
  • 1/2 tsp Red chillies
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds Jeerakam
  • Salt As reqd
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves

For seasoning:-

  • 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 10 nos Fenugreek seeds Uluva
  • 2 nos Dry red chillies chopped
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 2 tsp Oil

Instructions
 

  • Peel and cube the plantain and yam.
  • In a kadai, add plantain and yam pieces along with turmeric powder, chilly powder, salt, curry leaves and 1 cup of water.
  • Cook till the vegetables are done.
  • Meanwhile, grind together coconut, pepper, cumin seeds and green chilly to a fine paste.
  • Add this paste to the cooked vegetables.
  • Boil them well stirring continuously.
  • Add salt.
  • Finally add curd to this and simmer for 2 - 3 minutes.
  • :- Do not boil.
  • Splutter mustard seeds, red chilly, fenugreek seeds and curry leaves in a pan.
  • Add this to the gravy.
  • :- The simple and tasty Kaalan is ready to be served..
  • :- It is good to use bit sour type curd for preparing this dish.
