Tamarind Pulihora

Spicy rice dish made with tamarind or puli

Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 cups Any rice
  • 5 tsp Tamarind paste Puli
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 10 nos Green chillies
  • 1" cube Ginger
  • 2 nos Red chillies Kollamulaku
  • 2 tbsp Ground nuts Nelakadala
  • 1 tbsp Cashew nuts
  • 1 tbsp Mustard seeds
  • 2 1/2 tbsp Bengal gram Kadalaparippu
  • 2 1/2 tbsp Black gram Uzhunnuparippu
  • 2-3 pinches Asafoetida Kayam
  • 2 stems Curry leaves
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Sesame powder Ellu

Instructions
 

  • Cook rice and see to it that each grain is separate.
  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Add red chillies, Bengal gram, black gram, mustard seeds, groundnuts and cashews.
  • When the mustard seeds splutter, add asafoetida, curry leaves and green chillies & grated ginger.
  • Add tamarind paste and turmeric powder.
  • When the tamarind paste cooks and starts to leave oil, switch off the flame.
  • Add salt.
  • Add this mixture to the already cooked rice along with the sesame powder.
  • :- Need not be served hot. :- Do not keep it in the fridge as the taste shall be lost.
  • ***Note : Sesame powder is made by roasting sesame seeds and grinding it to a powder, adding salt and red chillies or red chilly powder.
