Vazhakka Kalan

Vazhakka Kalan is a delicious, traditional styled dish, very popular in Sadhya meals prepared from raw plantain. This is a very popular dish in Kerala Cuisine. What makes the dish unique and special is the blending of cooked plantain pieces with curd and an aromatic coconut mixture. Adding curd balances the sour taste of the dish. Ingredients
  

  • 400 gm Raw banana
  • 10 gm Chilly powder
  • 1 gm Turmeric powder
  • 200 gm Coconut
  • 16 nos Pepper corns optional
  • 1 gm Cumin seeds Jeerakam
  • 225 gm Curd
  • 3 sprigs Curry leaves
  • Salt As reqd

For seasoning:

  • 30 ml Oil
  • 1 gm Fenugreek seeds Uluva
  • 1 gm Mustard seeds
  • 1 no Broken red chillies Kollamulaku
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves

Instructions
 

  • Boil, peel and cut bananas into roundels.
  • Mix together bananas, chilly powder, half the turmeric, salt and enough water to cook bananas fairly dry.
  • Grind together to a very fine paste, coconut, pepper corns, rest of turmeric and cumin seeds.
  • When bananas are cooked, add ground ingredients, well beaten curd and more salt.
  • Simmer, stirring occasionally till the mixture becomes quite thick (10 -15 minutes). Remove from fire.
  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Add fenugreek, mustard seeds and broken red chillies.
  • When seeds crackle, add curry leaves and temper the dish.
  • :- Serve as a side dish for plain rice.
