Remove scales, gills, fins and alimentary canal of the fishes. Thoroughly clean and cut into medium sized pieces.
Apply turmeric powder, ginger- garlic paste and 1 tsp salt, mix well and keep for marination.
Take poppy seeds, ginger piece, garlic bulbs and one cup onion pieces into a blending jar and prepare fine spicy paste.
Take a deep bottomed pan, add oil and heat. Add the remaining cup of onion pieces and mustard seeds and fry. Add the half split green chillies and enough salt. Mix well.
Add the marinated fish pieces, spicy paste and red chilly powder and mix well.
Add two cups of water, stir well and simmer in low flame till the fish pieces are cooked well.
Serve hot as a side dish.
