Heat oil in a pan and add fenugreek seeds, shallots, black pepper and garlic. Fry for 2 minutes and drain from the oil. Grind well the fried ingredients and keep aside.
Add turmeric powder, red chilly powder and coriander powder in the same oil and saute in low flame till the oil separates.
Now add the ground paste. Mix well and add the tamarind paste and one cup of water. Bring to boil and add the dry fish.
Cook covered in low flame till the gravy thickens. Garnish with curry leaves.
