Bengal Gram-Chana Dal Onion Chutney

Bengal gram/chana dal/kadalai parippu/kadale bele onion chutney is prepared by roasting grated coconut, chana dal, spices and finally ground before seasoning

Ingredients
  

For roasting:

  • 1 tbsp Bengal gram/Chana dal Kadala parippu
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Coconut grated
  • 1/4 of Onion chopped
  • 1 no Tomato chopped
  • 1 no/as Red chillies
  • Aniseed A pinch, Saumph
  • Cinnamon A small piece, Karugapatta
  • 1 no Cloves Grambu
  • 1 no Cardamom Elakka
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • Salt As reqd
  • For seasoning:
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Urad dal Uzhunnu parippu
  • Oil As reqd
  • Curry leaves Few

Instructions
 

  • For preparing bengal gram/chana dal/kadalai parippu/kadale bele onion chutney, first heat 2 tsp oil in a pan and fry cinnamon, clove, cardamon and aniseed.
  • Add red chilly, chana dal and fry to a light brown color.
  • Add onion and fry till golden brown. Stir in chopped tomatoes, salt and saute for a few minutes.
  • Add grated coconut and fry for 2 minutes.
  • Cool the fried coconut mixture and grind in a mixie with some water.
  • For seasoning, heat some oil in a pan. Splutter mustard seeds. Add urad dal, curry leaves and pour the ground chana dal mix with 1/4 cup of water. Bring to boil and remove from fire.
  • Bengal gram/chana dal/kadalai parippu/kadale bele onion chutney is ready. Serve with idli or dosa.
