For roasting:
- Bengal gram/Chana dal(Kadala parippu) - 1 tbsp
- Coconut(grated) - 1 1/2 tbsp
- Onion(chopped) - 1/4 of
- Tomato(chopped) - 1 no
- Red chillies - 1 no/as
- Aniseed(A pinch, Saumph) -
- Cinnamon(A small piece, Karugapatta) -
- Cloves(Grambu) - 1 no
- Cardamom(Elakka) - 1 no
- Oil - 2 tsp
- Salt(As reqd) -
- For seasoning: -
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Urad dal(Uzhunnu parippu) - 1/2 tsp
- Oil(As reqd) -
- Curry leaves(Few) -

Instructions
- For preparing bengal gram/chana dal/kadalai parippu/kadale bele onion chutney, first heat 2 tsp oil in a pan and fry cinnamon, clove, cardamon and aniseed.
- Add red chilly, chana dal and fry to a light brown color.
- Add grated coconut and fry for 2 minutes.
- For seasoning, heat some oil in a pan. Splutter mustard seeds. Add urad dal, curry leaves and pour the ground chana dal mix with 1/4 cup of water. Bring to boil and remove from fire.
- Bengal gram/chana dal/kadalai parippu/kadale bele onion chutney is ready. Serve with idli or dosa.
