Pre-heat the oven to 160c. Grease an 8 inch round cake pan.
Take half the brown sugar and melt with half the milk over fire and add remaining milk and keep aside.
In a deep bowl, cream butter till soft and fluffy.
Whisk in the remaining sugar and eggs.
Sift the dry ingredients together.
Add alternately the remaining milk mixture and flour and pour into the greased pan.
Bake in the middle of the oven for about 40 minutes or until a tooth pick inserted near the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool.
ingredients for icing
1) 4 squares unsweetened chocolate (4 oz) and 1/4 cup butter, 1/3 cup milk, 1 tsp vanilla and 3/4 cup icing sugar.
2)In a bowl, melt chocolate and butter in a microwave, stir until smooth.
Cool slightly, beat in the milk, vanilla and sugar until smooth.
Split the cake in half, spread the icing on the halves, sides and top.
Note: If using all purpose flour add 1 1/2 tsp soda bi carb and sieve twice with the plain flour.
