Prawns Theeyal (Chemmeen)

Chemmeen Theeyal or Prawns Theeyal is a prawns preparation with roasted coconut gravy. It is a good accompaniment with rice. This is a very famous and mostly wanted in the state of Kerala.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 kg Prawns
  • 1/4 kg Shallots thinly sliced
  • 4 nos Green chillies chopped
  • 1 no Coconut grated, medium size
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp Fenugreek powder roasted
  • 1/4 cup Tamarind pulp
  • Salt as reqd
  • 3 tbsp Coconut oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard
  • 2 nos Dry red chillies
  • 2 sprigs Curry leaves

Instructions
 

  • Clean and wash prawns.
  • Dry roast grated coconut till it turns golden brown.
  • Then add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and fenugreek powder.
  • Roast for 2 more minutes in a low flame and remove from fire.
  • After cooling this roasted coconut mixture, grind it into a fine paste.
  • Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard, add curry leaves and dry red chillies.
  • Saute sliced shallots and chopped green chillies till shallots become soft.
  • Add prawns and saute for a while.
  • Add the roasted coconut paste along with tamarind pulp, salt and required quantity of water. 10)Cook the dish in a medium flame till it reaches the required consistency.
  • :- Remove from fire and serve hot with rice.
