Dal Bahar

A healthy and wonderful combination of Dal and Vegetables

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Red gram Thuvaraparippu
  • 1 no Carrot ½ inch cubes, medium
  • 7 - French beans ½ inch pieces
  • 1/4 of Cauliflower cut into small florets, small
  • 1 no Potato ½ inch cubes, medium
  • Fresh peas A handful
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds Jeerakam
  • 6 - Curry leaves
  • Asafoetida optional, Kayam
  • 1 - Green chillies slit
  • Ginger garlic paste - 1 tsp
  • 1 no Onion chopped
  • 2 nos Tomato chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp Red chilli powder
  • Salt As reqd
  • 2 tbsp Fresh coriander leaves chopped
  • Juice of a lemon

Instructions
 

  • Soak dal in 2 cups of water for an hour.
  • Add turmeric powder to it and cook it till done.
  • After the dal is cooked, add all the vegetables to it and cook it for 1 more whistle.
  • :- This helps the dal to be mashed, while the vegetables would be cooked.
  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and asafoetida.
  • Add the chopped onions, slit green chillies and ginger-garlic paste and saute till the raw smell goes.
  • Add red chilli powder, salt and chopped tomatoes and saute for 5 mins, till the oil separates.
  • Add the mashed dal and check for the seasoning.
  • Close the lid and let it simmer for a few mins.
  • Just before serving, add the lemon juice and coriander leaves.
  • :- Serve with Chappatis/Rice.
