Dal Gravy

Dal gravy - Maharashtrian style

Ingredients
  

  • 100 gm Red gram Thuvaraparippu
  • 4 - Garlic cloves
  • 2 - Green chillies
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds Jeerakam
  • 1 pinch Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 cup Coriander leaves
  • 2 cups Water
  • Salt As reqd
  • 1 tsp Oil

Instructions
 

  • Pressure cook the dal till it is soft.
  • Mash and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a cooking bowl.
  • Splutter mustard seeds and jeera.
  • Add garlic and chillies and saute till garlic changes color.
  • Add turmeric powder and saute.
  • Add dal followed by water and salt.
  • :- Adjust water such that the dal looks watery. It should not have a thick appearance.
  • Allow the mixture to boil for a few minutes or till you get the aroma of garlic.
  • Shut off the flame and add plenty of coriander leaves and keep the bowl closed.
  • :- This is an onion free recipe. Addition of onion will change the authentic taste. This type of dal preparation is called `Varan` in Marathi.
