Manathakkali Kuzhambu

This is a simple kuzhambu prepared with manathakkali. It is a typical Tamil Brahmin Iyer style recipe without onion and garlic.

Ingredients
  

  • manathakkali 100 gm
  • small onion 10 no.
  • tomato 1 no.
  • garlic 5 no.
  • tamarind water 1 /2 cup
  • coconut paste 1 cup
  • sambar powder 1 tsp
  • kuzhambu milagai powder 1 tsp
  • salt to taste
  • turmeric powder 1 tsp
  • oil 4 tsp
  • gingerly oil 3 tsp
  • mustard 1 tsp
  • broken urad dal 1/4 tsp
  • cumin seed 1/2 tsp
  • fenugreek seed 1/2 tsp
  • curry leaves 6 no.

Instructions
 

  • chop the onion, garlic and curry leaves
  • chop the tomato
  • clean and wash the manathakkali
  • in a kadai heat the oil and castor oil and temper the mustard, broken urad dal, cumin seed and fenugreek seed
  • now add manathakkali and garlic and saute it for 3 mins
  • add onion and curry leaves and saute it for 3 mins
  • add tomato and mix well
  • add salt, turmeric and asafoetida and mix it
  • now add sambar powder and kuzhambu milagai powder and mix it
  • add tamarind water and allow to cook for 5 mins
  • now add coconut paste, mix it and allow to cook until it becomes gravy consistency
  • now manathakkali kuzhambu is ready, serve with rice and vadagam
