Cabbage Spicy Poriyal (Muttaikoose Poriyal)

In south India cabbage is cooked in many different ways and one such common recipe is kara poriyal. It is a simple vegetarian South Indian dry curry with cabbage, coconut, and spices. This spicy curry with a hint of sweetness is a great way to include cabbage in your meals.

Ingredients
  

  • Cabbage 1 cup
  • small onion 1/2cup
  • red chili 2 no.
  • bengal gram 1/4 cup
  • curry leaves 1 bunch
  • red chili powder 1 tsp
  • salt to taste
  • turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • oil 4 tsp
  • mustard 1 tsp
  • broken urad dal 1/2 tsp
  • cumin seed 1/2 tsp
  • grated coconut 1/4 cup

Instructions
 

  • soak the bengal gram in water for 10 minutes
  • chop the cabbage,onion, red chili and curry leaves
  • in a pan heat the oil and temper the mustard, broken urad dal and cumin seeds
  • add onion,red chili and curry leaves and mix well until the onion turn into brown
  • add bengal gram and mix well
  • add salt, turmeric powder and red chili powder and mix well
  • add cabbage and mix well and allow for 3 minutes
  • add 2 glass of water to cabbage and allow to cook
  • once the water get dry and cabbage get cooked, add grated coconut and mix well and turn off the flame
  • cabbage spicy poriyal is ready
