Varutharacha Kadala Curry in Kerala Style is a treasured breakfast dish from God’s own country. This authentic and traditional styed Kadala Curry is a lip smacking favorite, very filling and comforting to see you through the day. This is a Malayalee’s favorite that goes well with breakfast dishes like Appam, Puttu, Idiyappam and dosa. These are the most popular breakfast dishes served everywhere, right from households, roadside eateries to top rated exotic hotels and restaurants. Puttu with a spicy Kadala Curry is one of my favorite dishes that I relish with my whole heart. Nadan dishes are in vogue these days. This is an easy to prepare dish that requires minimal ingredients. This is a very tasty and spicy dish, mixed with aromatic Indian spices and cooked in roasted coconut based freshly ground masala. It is the aroma of roasted coconut that makes this dish unique and special. Kerala is a land of coconuts and Varutharacha Kadala Curry is quite popular here.

Black Chickpeas Curry is a protein rich side dish. Chickpeas are quite filing and rich in many vital nutrients required for body. Growing up kids and elders need protein rich food in daily diet. This fragrant and mildly spiced Black Chickpeas Curry is well illustrated in meaningful simple steps. The perfection of the dish lies in the roasted coconut masala mixture. Once properly roasted, you will see oil oozing out of the mixture. You can capture the coconutty aroma and I bet this is the flavor you will love most. The nutritious dish should be included in your meal plan. While preparing the dish, keep note that chickpeas is soaked well in water before preparation, preferably overnight. Nadan Varutharacha Kadala Curry/ Black Chickpeas Curry

  • Soak kadala overnight or at least 8 hours.
  • Wash them well and pressure cook along with salt and enough water for 4 - 5 whistles or as needed. Keep the cooked chickpeas aside.
  • In a pan heat oil and add grated coconut, 3-4 shallots and roast in medium flame till it turns brown in color.
  • Then reduce the flame and add turmeric powder, chilly powder, coriander powder and garam masala. Roast till the raw smell goes.
  • Remove this roasted mix from the stove and allow to cool.
  • Grind cooled masala mix by adding enough water and make a very fine paste.
  • Add this ground paste to the cooked Kadala and let it boil till you get a medium consistency. Turn off the heat. Check salt and add more if required.
  • Heat a pan, add oil and splutter mustard seeds, add dry red chilies and sliced shallots. Roast till light brown. At this stage add curry leaves.
  • Add this tempering into the curry, mix and place the lid. Allow it to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  • This curry goes well with Puttu, Appam etc...
