Snake gourd(Padavalanga) and channa dhal(Kadalaparippu) curry

Ingredients
- Channa Dhal(Kadalaparippu) - 1 cup
- Castor oil(Vilakenna) - 2 tbsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
- Snake gourd(chopped, Padavalanga) - 1/2 of
- Salt(As reqd) -
- Cumin seeds(Jeerakam) - 1 tbsp
- Green chillies - 4 nos
- Small onions(Kunjulli) - 5 nos
- Garlic pods - 4 nos
- Grated Coconut - 3 tbsp
For seasoning:-
- Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
- Curry leaves - 10 nos
- Tomato - 1 no

Instructions
- Soak Channa dhall for 1 hour.
- Cook it with castor oil, turmeric powder and salt.
- When the bengal gram is half cooked, add snake gourd.
- Cook, until the gram and snake gourd is fully cooked.
- Heat oil in a pan or a kadai.
- Fry cumin seeds, green chillies, small onions, garlic and coconut, till it turns brown.
- Grind them nicely without adding water.
- Add the above paste into the Bengal gram mixture and cook for another 3 mins.
- Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a pan.
- Splutter mustard seeds.
- Add curry leaves and tomato and saute for a while.
- Add it to the Bengal gram mixture and mix well.
- :- Serve with rice or parotta.
- :- This koottu must be thick.

A very different way of cooking the vegetable. It tastes very good and goes great with rotis. I reduced the quantity of coconut and increased the onions and used sunflower oil instead of castor oil. The dish turned out great. Will make it often. Thanks!

(castor oil helps to reduce body heat. nothing harm in using them in cooking. In fact i use them frequently for cooking all types of lentils.)
Very good indeed. Thanks. But I was not sure of Castor oil. So used the til oil instead. Castor oil is also used for constipation patients to clean stomach. So was scared to use it. Please clarify.
This is one of my favourite dish now. I dont like to eat vegetables but when i cooked this dish i didn`t realise that i am eating a whole snakegourd. Its was very tasty and healthy too.
