Thengai Vazhai Thandu/ Coconut Banana Stem Poriyal

Vazhaithandu poriyal is a healthy classic South Indian side. Vazhaithandu poriyal is one the easy and healthy poriyal recipes. I accompanied it with kathrikai puli kulambu and rice, it was a hearty satisfying meal one of my fav lunch combo too..

  • vazhaithandu / plantain 1 stem
  • grated coconut 1/4 cup
  • onion 1 no.
  • red chili 2 no.
  • split moong dal 1/5 cup
  • salt to taste
  • cumin seed 1/2 tsp
  • oil 2 tbsp
  • mustard 1/4 tsp
  • broken urad dal 1/4 tsp
  • curry leaves 1 sprinkle


  • soak the split moong dal in water for 5 mins
  • chop the plantain / vazhai thandu and put it in water
  • chop the onion, red chili
  • in a kadai temper the mustard and broken urad dal
  • add curry leaves, onion and red chili and saute it for 5 mins
  • add chopped plantain/ vazhaithandu and mix it
  • add soaked moong dal and salt and mix well
  • add one glass water and allow to cook
  • Mean while add coconut and cumin seed and make powder
  • add this powder to vazhaithandu, mix it
  • now thengai vazhaithandu poriyal
