Kerala Beans Thoran

RugminiKamalan R

Kerala Beans Thoran is a very tasty vegetarian side dish prepared from french beans. The taste and flavor of beans blends very well with the flavor of grated coconut and other spices. Apart from the few spices used, fresh coconut oil and grated coconut grants Kerala Beans Thoran remarkable taste and flavor. This is a vegan gluten free dish, a favorite with Malayalees. ‘Thoran’ dishes are quite common in Kerala Cuisine and it can be made with a variety of veggies like cabbage, carrot, beetroot, spinach…the list goes on. Kerala Beans Thoran is one such dry side dish that has won the heart of Keralites. No Sadya is ever complete without a Beans Thoran. A thoran dish with Kachiya Moru goes perfect with a bowl of hot rice for noon day meals. The dish is termed ‘Beans Upperi’ in central part of Kerala.

While making any thoran dish, it is a must to use coconut oil for that authentic taste and flavor. Using any other oil, spoils the real flavor of Kerala. Kerala Beans Thoran is one of the easiest side dishes that require least ingredients. Fresh beans are washed, drained and the ends are cut off. It is then chopped thin. Beans are then cooked with crushed coconut mixture and sauteed dry. Another vital point while cooking beans, is not to overcook that destroys the flavor completely. Even you lose out on those essential vitamins and minerals. I personally love Beans Thoran more than anything else. This is a favorite dish with my kids too who are usually very stubborn and do not favor vegetables. This is a simple and healthy side dish, very popularly nourished with the Malayalee community.
