Ingredients
- Green gram(soaked overnight) - 250m g
- Onion(chopped) - 3 nos
- Green chillies(cut length wise) - 5 nos
- Ginger and garlic(grated) - 1 tbsp
- Dry red chillies(torn) - 10 nos
- Shallots/small onions(crushed, Kunjulli) - 10 nos
- Coconut oil - 5 tbsp
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Red chilly powder - 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves - 2 springs
- Water(As reqd) -
- Salt(As reqd) -

- For preparing cherupayar olathiyathu, make a fine paste out of the red chillies, shallots(2 nos), 1/4th tsp ginger and garlic.
- In a pressure cooker add the chopped onions, green gram, salt, green chillies, the remaining ginger, garlic, curry leaves, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, 1 tbsp of oil and water. Pressure cook it for approximately 5 whistles.
- Then heat a pan over low flame, add oil and splutter mustard seeds.
- Toss in 1 or 2 dry red chillies and put it into the mustard. When it is done add the remaining crushed shallots and curry leaves.
- To this add the pressure cooked green gram and heat it untill it becomes a semi solid consistency. Remove it from the flame.
- Cherupayar olathiyathu is ready. Serve with puttu or kanji.
