Nellika Achar is a spicy pickle dish prepared from Gooseberry or Nellika. Nellika is one of the most nutritious of vegetables and it will not lose its nutrient content even after processing. Hence eating raw and in pickled form doesn't make much of a difference. Gooseberry is a rich source of vitamin C and so its good for treating colds. For preparing the spicy mouthwatering dish, first boil the amlas in a steamer till it becomes tender. You can also cook in a pressure cooker for 2 minutes. Keep the cooked nellika aside to cool and cut into 4 pieces.
Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard and when it splutters add red chilly and saute for 2 minutes.
Add chopped nellikai to this and saute for a minute.
Add turmeric powder and chilli powder to this and saute for a minute. You should saute the powders in low flame otherwise the powders will get burnt.
Add asafoetida to this and saute for a minute.
Add salt and little water, saute for 2 minutes until gravy becomes thick.
Now the pickle dish is ready to serve. This pickle can be used from that day itself. Gooseberries have a slightly bitter sweet flavor and hence kids do not like the flavor. But if you can make your kids to eat the dish, then its favorable to them.
