Onion Sambar - Tamilnadu Style

Kunjulli Sambhar or Chinna Vengaya Sambar in Tamilnadu Style is a very delicious dish that goes well with dosa, idli and rice. The spicy tangy flavor makes the dish a worth try.

Masala to be ground:

  • Heat oil in a pan or a vessel.
  • Add mustard seeds, red chillies, fenugreek powder and fry.
  • Add small onions and saute for a while.
  • When it turns colour, add tamarind water and allow it to boil.
  • Add cooked dal and the ground masala.
  • :- The ground masala should be mixed with water, so as to dilute it.
  • Bring Onion Sambhar to a boil and switch it off.
  • Onion Sambhar is best with vada. Vada can be soaked in sambhar for 15 mts and can have have as vada sambhar.
  • :- Serve Onion Sambhar hot with rice or dosa or vada.

    Well …. i tried it out and it came out well…but this is not how chinna vengaya sambar tastes in tamil nadu cuisine…maybe u shud consider renaming it to ulli theeyal and change the cuisin to kerala ……..

    The masala ingredients must be roasted (except for the coconut) prior to grinding. This is arachuvitta sambar. I`m gonna try tomorrow.

    i tried this today and think it tastes a lot like our “ulli theeyal”…it was good only i was looking for sth different from our regular kerala dishes

    I tried this recipe and wow,it was too tasty.It tates great with dosa and idli.Please do post such recipes.
