  • 1/2 cup Split bengal gram/Chana dal Kadala parippu
  • 1 no Onion chopped
  • 1 stick Cinnamon Karugapatta
  • 1 no Cloves Grambu
  • 1 no Bay leaf Karuga ela
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds Jeerakam
  • 1/4 tsp Cayenne pepper ground
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp Lemon juice
  • Coriander leaves Few, chopped
  • 1 tbsp Ghee
  • Salt As reqd


  • For preparing sukhi bengal gram/chana dal/kadalai parippu/kadale bele, first soak chana dal in water for one hour.
  • Rinse and add 1 1/2 cup water, turmeric and required salt to chana dal and cook in medium heat until chana dal is just cooked. Remove from fire and keep aside.
  • Heat ghee in a pan and saute cinnamon, clove, bay leaf, cumin seeds and cayenne pepper for a few seconds.
  • Add chopped onion and fry till brown.
  • Stir in cooked chana dal and mix gently. Cook covered in low heat for 5 more minutes.
  • Sukhi bengal gram/chana dal/kadalai parippu/kadale bele is ready. Sprinkle lemon juice and garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Mix well and serve chana dal hot with rice or parathas.
