Chayotte(CHOW-CHOW) Curry

Chayotte curry with sesame powder

  • 1 no Chayotte or 1 cup full of diced cubes
  • 1 no Onion minced, medium
  • 1/4 cup Coriander leaves chopped
  • 1/4 tsp Salt

For sesame powder:


  • Dry roast 2 red chillies and sesame seeds for 1 minute on medium heat until they are fluffy. Set aside to cool for 15 mins.
  • Coarse grind the dry roasted sesame seeds and red chillies with a pinch of salt and keep aside.
  • Heat a spoon of oil in a pan.
  • Season with black gram, Bengal gram, mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves. Saute for a while.
  • Add minced ginger and garlic followed by onions and turmeric powder.
  • Saute until onions are transparent.
  • Add the diced chayote cubes and salt and stir well.
  • Saute for 2 - 3 mins on high heat.
  • Cover and cook on medium heat until cooked well.
  • Once they are cooked, add the prepared sesame powder to the above, mix well and saute for a couple of mins.
  • Finally, add coriander leaves and mix well.
  • Cover with the lid and switch off the stove and leave it for 5 mins.
  • :- The flavour of cilantro and sesame powder is absorbed by the the vegetable and it tastes very good with hot hot rice.
  • :- While dicing the chayotte, discard the single seed inside the vegetable which is similar to the same in young mangoes. :- Instead of chayotte, u can prepare it with other vegetables like ridgegourd or bottlegourd or snakegourd.
