Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup Whole black gram soaked, Uzhunnu parippu
  • 1 cup Rice washed and drained
  • 2 nos Onions chopped
  • Ginger garlic paste - 1 tsp
  • 1/2 cup Chilly powder
  • 1/4 cup Turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp Gram flour Kadala podi
  • 3 nos Cloves Grambu
  • 1 inch Cinnamon Karugapatta
  • 2 nos Bay leaves Karuva ela
  • 2 nos Black cardamoms Elakka
  • 1/2 tsp Aniseeds Sajeerakam
  • Ghee As reqd
  • Salt As reqd

Instructions
 

  • For preparing punjabi namkeen chawal, cook the soaked gram in little water till soft & tender.
  • Cool and mix well with your hands to mash.
  • Add it to the ginger-garlic paste, chilly powder, turmeric powder, gram flour and salt. Mix well.
  • Heat ghee in a pan, prepare small balls with the gram flour mixture and fry till golden. Drain and keep aside.
  • Heat 2 tbsp ghee in a pan and fry the onions, cardamoms, cloves, cinnamon, bay leaves and aniseeds till brown.
  • Add the rice, fry for a while and cook with 2 cups of hot water till half done.
  • Add the fried balls, cover and cook over a low flame till it is fully cooked.
  • Punjabi namkeen chawal is ready.
