Vellarikka Kichadi

Vellarikka Kichadi is a tasty and mildly spiced cucumber side dish that goes very well with hot steaming rice. With its tangy mild flavor, Vellarikka Kichadi is a cool comforting dish. The dish is unique and special with cooked cucumber pieces tossed with coconut mixture and dipped in creamy curd. This is a Sadhya special dish very prevalent during Onam celebrations. The dish is relished along with other vegetarian delicacies served for a Sadhya. Curd is nutritious and good for cooling the body especially in summer. Ingredients

250 g Cucumber peeled, cleaned and cut into very small pieces, Vellarikka
5 nos Green chillies cut into small round pieces
2 tbsp Grated Coconut
1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
1 cup Curd not sour
For seasoning:
1 tbsp Coconut oil
1 tsp Mustard seeds
1 - Dry red chillies Kollamulaku
Curry leaves Few

Instructions

For preparing the dish, Take a pan and cook the diced cucumber along with some water, chillies and salt. Let the water content dry up completely.
Take a blender and grind together the grated coconut and cumin seeds to a coarse paste.
Add crushed mustard seeds to it and mix well.
When the cucumber is completely cooked (there should not be any amount of water left in the vessel), add the ground coconut mixture into it and mix well.
Season the kichadi dish with mustard seeds, red chillies and curry leaves.
Allow it to cool.
Add curd to this mixture and mix well.
Vellarikka Kichidi, a tasty side dish with rice is ready. It adds a flavor to the rice dish and within minutes you will be seen asking for more of the kichadi. Among vegetarian dishes, this particular kichadi dish stands out.
