Beef Chatti Pathiri also termed ‘Adukku Pathiri’ is a famous North Malabari snack made during festival occasions like Ramadan and other festivities. This is a popular Muslim snack, a favorite one throughout Kerala. Though a snack, the dish is a bit more heavier and filling. Preparing the dish is a bit tedious, you need some patience and a perfect vessel too for layering the beef filling. Beef Chatti Pathiri is unique and special with chappatis or pancakes layered alternatively with a spicy minced meat masala. This is a must try dish in your kitchen. The specialty of the dish is that the layered pancakes or chappathis are pan fried together in one kadai. In North Malabar, Beef Chatti Pathiri is quite popular with its close relative ‘the sweet version without beef’ running almost parallel. Sweet versions are prepared with a mixture of coconut, sugar and other ingredients. The dish resembles ‘lasagna’ with thin sheets of pancakes and stuffing. Serve Beef Chatti Pathiri with hot Masala Chai.
Beef Chatti Pathiri is a delicious and complete meal by itself. The protein rich snack is healthy and very wholesome too. I came to know about the recipe from a Muslim friend of mine settled in Malabar region. This recipe is unfamiliar in other regions of Kerala. It requires some of your time for preparation but its worth the effort. It tasted all so yummy and we skipped our dinner for the night. You can replace atta for maida if you like it that way. But I am a hater of maida and I stay away from it. Especially I do not like my kids savoring maida that is not good for health. Beef is rich in protein and other vital nutrients required for body.
