Dates Neyyappam is an innovative and healthy snack that has evolved from the traditional styled Neyyappam, a sweet snack from Kerala Cuisine. Neyyappam was often prepared during festive occasions like Vishu and Onam. Dates Neyyappam is a wonderful alternative, a Healthy Snack, favorable for growing up kids and the elderly. Dates Neyyappam is prepared using rice flour, jaggery, dates syrup and other flavorful ingredients. The preparation of Dates Neyyappam involves mixing rice flour with jaggery and dates mixture to form a thick batter. The batter is then flavored with cardamom powder, grated coconut, a pinch of salt and ghee for additional flavors. One vital point, keep the batter aside for four hours. Now we are nearing the completion. Spoonfuls of batter is cooked in hot boiling oil until golden brown and crispy. Traditional Neyyappam was cooked in a special pan termed ‘Appachatti’ which has small rounds or shallow molds. The molds were filled with batter and cooked until the snack turns golden brown.

  • Take a wide bowl and add rice flour into it.
  • Pour dates syrup and melted jaggery.
  • Mix well. The consistency should be loose than idli batter. Add more water if you want to get the exact consistency level.
  • Add salt, cardamom powder, ghee and grated coconut. Mix it and check the taste. Keep the batter for 4 hours.
  • Take out the batter and pour 1 small ladle of batter into medium hot oil and fry till golden brown in color. Fry it in medium flame.
  • Enjoy Dates Neyyappam.
