Kerala Vazhakka Thoran is a vegetarian dish traditionally prepared from raw plantains. You will find the dish as an integral part of Sadhya menu. Raw bananas are a much loved and cherished vegetable. There are plantain trees in the backyard of most houses in Kerala. During monsoon season whenever banana trees fall before the bunch ripens, this thoran is planned. Kerala Vazhakka Thoran is unique, tasty and very nutritious with chopped plantain pieces blended with a spicy coconut mixture. The dish is very simple to prepare and tastes great with hot rice.   • For preparing the traditional styled dish, slowly peel off the outer surface of the plantain skin and finely chop them.
  • Put the chopped pieces in water.
  • Add a little gruel water(Kanji vellam) into the above water and keep it for sometime. :- This is done to get rid of the serum.
  • Place the above chopped plantain pieces along with turmeric powder, water and required salt in a vessel and allow it to cook. Keep this aside.
  • Place grated coconut, cumin seeds, green chillies, garlic cloves and curry leaves in a mixer bowl and run it once into a coarse form.
  • Mix together the coconut mixture with the cooked plantain.
  • Heat oil in a pan or a kadai.
  • Splutter mustard seeds and saute red chillies, rice and curry leaves.
  • Add the plantain mixture and mix well.
  • Lower the flame and cook the thoran till done.

    Do we have to add cooked plain rice?
