Chicken Pola | Chicken Cake | Irachi Pola – A Unique Malabar Delicacy

Introduction

Chicken Pola, also known as Irachi Pola or Chicken Cake, is a traditional Malabar-style savoury cake made with spiced chicken and eggs. Originating from the Muslim kitchens of North Kerala, this unique dish holds a special place during Ramadan and festive gatherings.

Cultural Significance in Malabar Cuisine

In the Malabar region of Kerala, culinary traditions blend spice, richness, and warmth. The dish is a fine example of this fusion. It is commonly served as an evening snack during Ramadan or as a special treat during family occasions. Unlike fried or curried dishes, this steamed or pan-cooked chicken cake stands out for its presentation and the balanced mix of protein and spice.

Visual Appeal and Taste Profile

The golden hue from eggs, the soft texture from cooked chicken, and the aromatic blend of spices make the dish both visually appealing and delicious. Each bite delivers a balanced taste of savoury chicken and the richness of egg, making it a hit with both adults and kids. The top layer, often garnished with fried onions or cashews, adds a delightful crunch to contrast the soft layers beneath.

Chicken Pola as a Healthy Alternative

One of the reasons Chicken Pola is gaining popularity outside traditional households is its health-conscious cooking method. Unlike deep-fried snacks, it is usually pan-cooked with minimal oil or steamed, making it lighter on the stomach. The high protein content from eggs and chicken also makes it a filling snack option.

Conclusion: A Must-Try Kerala Special

Chicken Pola is a must-try if you’re exploring Kerala cuisine beyond the usual dishes. Its unique preparation method, delightful appearance, and nutritional value make it stand out in the world of South Indian snacks. Whether served at tea time or included in an Iftar platter, this dish will surely leave a lasting impression on your taste buds.
