Elanchi from Malabar is a delectable snack or breakfast dish that originates from the northern region of Kerala. The sweet treat is popular for its uniqueness, aromatic flavors and the perfect balance of sweetness. The sweet flavored dish is a traditional Malabari dish that is often prepared during weddings, festivals and other occasions. It showcases the rich culinary aspects of the dish that is loved by locals and visitors alike. The intricate preparation and the use of rich ingredients creates a remarkable profile. The key or basic ingredients of Elanchi is the outer covering made from a combination of maida, eggs and a series of flavorful ingredients. The mixture is blended into a smooth mixture and rolled out into thin pancakes. The sweet flavored filling of Elanchi is what truly sets the dish apart. It is typically made with a combination of grated coconut, condensed milk and chopped almonds that is combined well by stirring.

Now we are entering the finishing stage of Elanchi. The sweet flavored coconut mixture is placed on the rolled out pancakes and folded into a pocket as shown in the figure. The edges are folded to the inside so the ingredients do not spill out. The snack is a match made in heaven and it tantalizes your taste buds. The delicate parcels make a wholesome and healthy treat loved by the old and young alike. I chanced upon the dish during by last visit to Malabar region and since then, the dish has been the star of my home especially my kids. Do try Elanchi at home and don’t forget to send me feedback. The almond topping provide a delightful and nutty contrast with a crunchiness compared to the soft outer layer. You can explore a well detailed Elanchi recipe here. Enjoy the rich snack.
