Kappa Erachi

V

Kappa Erachi is a mashed spicy concoction of cooked tapioca with beef, a favorite ‘Thattukada’ dish from God’s own country. The dish can be savored as a whole meal or even as a snack. Cooked tapioca and beef are simmered or cooked in low flame in a paste of fragrant fried coconut and spices that makes the dish heavenly. Kappa Erachi is quite different from Kappa Biriyani. There is no coconut in Kappa Biriyani, it is just a seasoned mixture of mashed kappa and cooked beef. I love both these preparations but I favor Kappa Erachi more. Tapioca is termed kappa in malayalam. To be honest, kappa means a lot many fond memories to a Malayali, comfort food, fun, favorite, satisfaction, nadan, the list goes on. Tapioca grows plenty here and is quite economical too. The seasons are well suited for its cultivation.

I have shared an authentic recipe of Kappa Erachi cooked by my mother here. Beef cubes are cooked with salt and turmeric. Cooked tapioca is kept aside after draining off water. Grated coconut is roasted with garlic, pepper corns and other ingredients and ground to a fine paste. Take a wide pan and stir in cooked beef, cooked tapioca and the spicy coconut mixture. Adjust the level of salt and cook for a few minutes gently blending the Kappa Irachi koottu. Buy beef from known sources so that it cooks well. You can go for beef with that extra fat for the rich taste. Of course for those with cholesterol and heart related problems, it is better to stay away from such delicacies. Occasional binging is fun and it does more good to your body, both mentally and physically. Try the wonderful dish with your loved ones. This is a nutritious dish, wholesome and very filling too. You can discover a well detailed Kappa Erachi recipe here that can be easily prepared prepared at home.
